Jumping The Broom

This ceremony is done as an act of remembrance and to honor the ancestors of the past. A broom itself represents cleanliness, the hearth and family. It can also represent fertility. The jumping of the broom is a leap of faith into marriage. In some parts of Africa, ceremonial brooms are used to sweep away evil.

“By Jumping the broom, you are honoring and respecting your ancestors legacy and their heritage. Jumping the broom represents the coming together of both families and the commitment that the two of you have to each other in life. It represents strength, love, togetherness, loyalty and respect, which is essential for a successful marriage.”
